Alfresco Bites for Families Across London

Fresh air and fabulous family food – sounds good right? If you’re looking to make the most of the sunshine this weekend, check out our guide to the best alfresco bites across the capital. From street food to restaurant pop ups, picnic outposts and pizza in the park, here 10 tasty ideas to get you back out and about after lockdown…

Covent Garden To Go
It’s been up and running since 15th June but now restaurants are back up and running (hoorah!), Covent Garden’s Rainbow East Pizaza is just the ticket for those looking for an alfresco spot to eat with their families. With plenty of choice when it comes to food neaby, will you plump for a sandwich from Frenchie, fish and chips from Oystermen or ice cream from Venchi? All visitors will be encouraged to follow a one-way system of entry, with all seats and tables spaced 2 metres apart. Seats and tables will be cleaned after every use, with hand sanitiser stations upon entry and exit.

Pergola Paddington
With oodles of space, the sky-high street food market is a great spot for a daytime bite with older kids. With booking available and a few necessary changes to help customers feel as safe and comfortable as possible, you and your bubble can tuck into the Temaki Bros sushi rolls, Babek Brothers, serving juicy kebabs, Thunderbird’s epic  fried chicken and the barbecue brilliance of Salt Shed. 

Wild by Tart X Ecclestone Yards
Just a hop, skip and a pram stroll from Victoria station, Ecclestone Yards is a much loved spot for creatives, foodies and wellness lovers. With the weather set for sunny this weekend, why not book a socially distanced deckchair in the heart of Ecclestone Yards to tuck into food from the brand new Wild by Tart. Founded by Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison, the successful duo behind bespoke catering company Tart London, their summer pop-up is serving up seasonal dishes cooked using our charcoal grill and wood oven. Their Pizzetti and array of grilled veggie dishes are as colourful as they are tasty. Runs Thursday – Sunday. 

Brown & Green’s Bev The Bar
If you’re close to Crystal Palace go give Bev a visit! Brown & Green LIFE’s brand new bar serving food, drinks and ice cream between midday and 10pm each day. Alongside Bev, LIFE is once again open and ready to serve up our full menu of sunshine brekkies, brunches, lunch specials, iced coffees, cake and more! With picnic tables and park surrounds, early risers can nip in for a coffee and croissant from 8.30am. You can find Bev and LIFE close to Crystal Palace Park’s Thicket Road entrance (overlooking the playground). With mapped out ‘order here’ queues & ‘collection point’ queues, Brown & Green have you and your families safety covered.

Coal Drops Yard
A firm favourite with families, King’s Cross Coal Drops Yard is open and lined with tables and chairs for those looking to pull up a pew and grab a bite. Hicce London have the BBQ fired up and their Hicce Market on the ground floor of Wolf & Badger has grab and go food and picnic pre-orders for when the sun is high in the sky. Sandwiches don’t come much grander than Sons + Daughters and there’s salads, soups and deli treats at Coal Office’s Grab and Go. With green spaces and canalside spots also available to sit and eat around King’s Cross, don’t forget to get your frozen fix at Ruby Violet and their recently reopened ice cream emporium.

Bluebird Chelsea
As of 4th July, Bluebird Chelsea once again opened their doors to their restaurant and their much loved terrace with views of King’s Road. Whilst it’s first come, first served on the terrace, those looking for an early dinner with little ones should be able to secure an alfresco spot. For under £8 your mini ones can munch their way through three courses including hummus and veggie sticks, roasted chicken and steamed vegetables, fish and chips, grilled sausages, greens and mash and either ice cream or fruit skewers for pud.  The cafe and courtyard also offer a great outdoor spot for breakfast and brunch.

Vinegar Yard London
With cracking views of The Shard, Vinegar Yard is back open and operating strictly to Government guidelines. With plenty of seating available across their vast outside area, Vinegar Yard are asking that all visitors  grab free track and trace ticket for entry, which is easily obtained at This weekend sees the welcome return of Nanny Bill’s, famous for there hand pressed burgers and croquettes and Million Pound Menu winners Baba G’s serving up their iconic Bhangra Burgers from the cheeky tikka chicken to the veggie friendly paneer saag. 

Dulwich Picture Gallery
The Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and Canalettos may be locked away for a little longer yet, but the good news is that Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Gallery Café is back open dn serving up a delicious food and drink take-away menu which you can enjoy with friends and family at one of the picnic tables or on the grass of the grounds. From juicy aged beef burgers served piled high in a brioche bun to brunch-ready buttermilk pancakes topped with caramelised banana. Kids picnic boxes are generously packed with York ham or Lincolnshire poacher cheddar sandwiches, Pipers crisps or Propercorn and a choice of market fruit.

400 Rabbits at Brockwell Lido
Whilst the pool may be closed, the pizza ovens are fired up at the brand new 400 Rabbits and perfect for a picnic in Brockwell Park. Having taken over the lido cafe, 400 Rabbits are connoisseurs when it comes to creating the best sourdough pizzas and with it’s founders being brothers they know just what it takes when serving up food for the whole family.  From cheesy and meaty to vegan varieties – you’ll be spoilt for choice when it come to grabbing a slice. There’s The Pineapple One for those who love a Hawaiian, The Beef One primed with 40 day aged rare breed beef mince, chilli and mozerella and our fave – The Feta One: Courgette, feta, mozzarella, pine nuts and chimichurri – lean green gorgeousness. 

The Garden at The Berkley
Overdue birthday treat? Seeking a grown-ups only dinner out? The Garden at The Berkley is not only perfectly timed for summer, but the brand new pop-up restaurant and bar really is something special after months of meals at home. Draped in lights, dotted with lanterns and dancing to an ambient beat, it’s a leafy alfresco space that feels like a mini Mediterranean Island. The grill is serving small plates and big flavours, while post-lockdown pick-me-ups come in the form of cool, colourful cocktails.
